I hope and pray that the Canadian people rise up and overthrow the leftist fascist tyranical portion of the Canadian government. Canadians have the right to keep and bear arms as an English right. We in America are fighting against leftist fascist tyranny. Please, Canada, set an example and rise up. If you don't rise up, then you are as good as slaves to the leftist dictators.

Matt,

It is true that Canada is more socially democratic and less conservative than the United States. But your hyperbole about "leftist dictators" and the inability of Canadians to stand up to them ignores that many of the oppressive policies in existence in North America were passed by conservatives.

Though conservatives are more supportive of the right to keep arms for self-defence than social democrats (who are openly hostile), they are not supportive of many other liberties (and are in fact hostile).

In particular, think of legal rights and protections. These institutional structures are the "last resort" defence of our liberty. Where final judgement on the law is passed, liberty most needs protection.

By passing policies that increase the likelihood and severity of punishment, conservatives attack those institutional structures most fundamental to the protection of our liberty.

The situation is so bad in your country — the United States — that more people are now in jail in both real and per capita terms than any other country on earth. Put another way, your country robs more people of all their liberty than any other nation on planet earth.

It is easy to wave a self-righteous finger from the United States, when it comes to freedoms unpopular with social democrats, viz. the right to arms, regulation of telecommunications, etc. However, if we look at freedoms unpopular with conservatives, America looks equally as bad.

Finally, if Bruce Montague were found guilty of a victimless firearms crime (or any victimless crime) in the United States (say selling guns across state lines with no permit), he would be going to jail for much, much longer than 18 months. That is, his liberty would be compromised for a much longer period of time. Further, that the government is threatening to take his home using anti-private property rights legislation is thanks in part to American conservatives. They popularised such measures in their "War on Drugs." On this score, Montague would be worse off in the U.S. too. There, his property would have been seized and sold before he was even convicted.

I believe that it is every Canadian's — not just every Canadian gun owner's — duty to contribute to the defense fund for the appeal of Bruce's conviction.

Even some gun owners are convinced that Bruce should not have gone to the extent he did. To those, all I can say is that they should listen to Bruce's video and hear what he's saying. He tried very hard for many years to get arrested. The attempts to get arrested had to be escalated over time as none of them worked for quite a while. It is important to understand and listen carefully to Bruce's speech in this video, in order to come to a realization of how he got where he is.

Even some firearm owners think that he should not have done certain things. But listen carefully: he had to escalate defiance of the Firearms Act to a level where police had no other option than to arrest him. Simply not complying with registration did not work, not complying with licensing did not work either.

Bruce fights an unjust law that makes criminals out of anyone who is doing something without government written approval, something that was perfectly legal, normal, and widely accepted just a few years prior to the enactment of the bill C-68.

It is important to understand that, in the persecution of this victimless "crime", the state conducted itself in the ugliest manner possible. While real murderers walk the streets of Canada after serving just 18 1/2 months, a good man fighting an unjust law to get it off the books will do the same time in jail.

This is a truly majestic message. Dialing 911 takes seconds, waiting for help to arrive could take the rest of your life.

We have the right to self-preservation. It's a constitutional right.

I'm a journalism student from Ryerson university in Toronto. I did an article on Gun Control in Canada and I'm happy to say I was able to speak to Bruce in late November, before his trial.

Amusingly, all the interviews with the anti-gun crowd were terrible, did not fit into my story, or just didn't happen.

Wendy Cukier is a professor at Ryerson, so I thought "sweet! Easy interview!"; she blew me off and didn't return any of my calls! I must have left like 12 messages on her Ryerson voice mail, as well as her CGO voice mail.
